Project Title Alternative Mouse Trial and Assessment System for Adaptive Computer Control Head and Arm Mounted Art Instrument Game to Improve Speed and Accuracy of Name Recall Description of Project Alternative Mouse Trial and Assessment System for Adaptive Computer Control The NSF has asked for two devices which can be used as computer inputs instead of the standard keyboard and mouse. These devices will be used to help people with upper extremity disorders which limit fine motor motor control of their hands and arms. The two devices that we will be designing will allow gross hand and arm movements to be transferred to smooth movement of the mouse on a computer screen. One of the devices will also be foot operated so that a user can learn to use their feet to move the cursor on the screen. Two computer games will also be created to assess speed and accuracy to determine which device is best for different users. Head and Arm Mounted Art Instrument Many people around the world are afflicted with Cerebal Palsy, a disorder which limits a person's ability to control their body. Many of these people wish to express themselves creatively through painting or drawing but are unable to becuase of their limited mobility. The purpose of this project is to create a device which will allow people with limited mobility to draw or paint on an easel. This will be done by building a device which will be mounted on the individuals head or shoulder and extend out to the drawing surface. We hope that this will help people with these disorders to express themselves like any other person. Game for Speed and Accuracy of Name Recall The NSF has asked for a computer game to aid people with memory disorders such as Alzheimer's and Dementia. Many of these people experience frustration and embarassment when relatives or friends come to visit them and they can not remember their names. Many neuroscientists have suggested that constant practice can slow or even stop the degradation of memory from these diseases. We will be designing a computer game which can be played by any individual while their friends or relatives are not present. The game will allow a caretaker to upload pictures of loved ones which the user can then practice naming. We will also be including voice recognition software to allow ease of use for elderly people who may not be familiar or proficient with the standard keyboard and mouse interface. |
